DESCRIPTION: The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State's legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government. The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland's 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness.
OAG is seeking applicants for an experienced attorney to serve as an Assistant Attorney General (AAG). The position is a fellowship sponsored by the New York University School of Law State Energy & Environmental Impact Center (State Impact Center). The non-partisan State Impact Center supports state attorneys general in defending and promoting clean energy, climate, and environmental laws and policies. More information about the State Impact Center can be found at https//stateimpactcenter.org. This is a two-year fellowship position and is expected to be extended for at least an additional year, contingent on funding. The NYU School of Law pays for the AAG's salary and benefits. Under the structure of the fellowship, the appointed attorney will work solely under the direction of the Office, but will be an employee of NYU.
The AAG will be part of the newly established Federal Accountability Unit within the Civil Litigation Division. The Federal Accountability Unit plays a critical role in protecting Maryland residents by responding to federal overreach and regulatory rollbacks. As part of this team, the Assistant Attorneys General will lead and participate in critical federal and multistate litigation efforts such as defending environmental laws and protecting civil rights. This is a unique and exciting opportunity to contribute to the rule of law in Maryland.
The Assistant Attorney General will be responsible for litigating complex and high-impact cases in federal courts, including challenges to federal regulatory rollbacks and unlawful executive actions. The position also involves supporting and leading multistate litigation efforts in coordination with other states and key stakeholders. Additional responsibilities include drafting pleadings, legal briefs, motions, and discovery, as well as responding to emergency litigation involving administrative law or constitutional questions. The AAG will also engage in litigation and advocacy on a variety of federal actions that directly impact the federal-state partnership.
EXPERIENCE: Candidates should have at least five years of litigation experience. Substantial experience in federal court is strongly preferred. Strong legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills are essential. A demonstrated commitment to public service, environmental or civil rights advocacy, and/or high-impact litigation is highly desirable. In addition, knowledge of federal administrative law and constitutional issues is preferred. Applicants must be admitted to the Maryland Bar (or eligible to waive in). Although this position is funded by NYU's School of Law, the salary range will be based on experience and in accordance with OAG's salary-setting processes to ensure pay equity among employees.
SUBMISSION: Interested candidates should submit a resume, cover letter, writing sample, and a list of three references in pdf format to Adam Kirschner, Federal Accountability Unit Chief, akirschner@oag.state.md.us and Randee Patillo, Paralegal, rpatillo@oag.state.md.us by close of business on Thursday, May 22, 2025.
