Salary: This position offers a salary range of $102,426 - $149,781, with potential for advancement up to $165,372 based on qualifications, equity, and hiring guidelines. Initial salary offers are determined by qualifications, experience, and available budget, and typically do not exceed $149,781.

DESCRIPTION: The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State's legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government. The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland's 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness.
The Office of the Attorney General is seeking a highly skilled senior litigator for a Senior Assistant Attorney General position in its Contract Litigation Unit. The position is responsible for litigating factually and legally complex disputes arising from the formation and administration of State construction and service contracts, including, but not limited to, defending challenges to procurement solicitations or award determinations, and defending claims appeals challenging agency procurement determinations before the Maryland State Board of Contract Appeals. A significant amount of time will be spent researching and motion writing and/or conducting or defending depositions and preparing for trials and/or providing advice on contract and procurement issues to a variety of State agencies as well as mentoring and/or supervising and/or managing other Assistant Attorneys General in the Unit. The Unit Chief and Deputy Unit Chief may call upon the Senior Assistant Attorney General to assist with various projects and/or handle matters that present novel legal arguments.
The cases handled by this Unit require a demonstrated ability to respond to and propound written discovery, conduct and/or defend depositions, draft and respond to motions, and present arguments before an administrative board and Maryland's circuit and appellate courts and/or recognize when settlement may be appropriate as well as the ability to handle complex litigation matters. The Senior Assistant Attorney General for the Contract Litigation Unit routinely participates in learning groups and/or special projects for the Office of the Attorney General and regularly participates in continuing legal education. The position offers the opportunity to handle significant civil litigation in a collaborative working environment.
EXPERIENCE: The ideal candidates will have a minimum of seven years of progressively responsible litigation experience, including a minimum of one year of supervisory experience. Other minimum requirements include Maryland Bar membership (or eligibility to waive in); first chair deposition experience with fact and expert witnesses; first chair trial experience; strong mentoring abilities; and strong analytical, writing and advocacy skills. Experience in construction or procurement law is strongly preferred, and knowledge of e-discovery platforms are helpful.
