In order to access the full MD SAKI grant funding, Maryland was required to conducted a detailed inventory of all the unsubmitted sexual assault evidence kits that were collected on or before April 30, 2018—the month when Maryland applied for MD SAKI grant funding.
The inventory data varies for several reasons, including the fact that some agencies have longer retention requirements than the state's 20-year mandate, which was not implemented until 2017. Prior to this requirement, each jurisdiction set its own policy for retaining unsubmitted SAEKs. For example, the Montgomery County Police Department's (MCPD) policy is to retain all unsubmitted SAEKs indefinitely. Therefore, MCPD's number of unsubmitted SAEKs is higher when compared to other agencies. Conversely, some agencies policies provided for the destruction of SAEKs within a shorter timeframe. As such, these agencies' number of unsubmitted SAEKs is smaller compared to other agencies. The inventory data should be viewed within this context.
The unsubmitted SAEK inventory data is set forth within the table below. This data does not include partially tested SAEKs.
Testing under the MD SAKI Grant is being conducted in phases. The SAEKs are being outsourced for testing by Bode Technology via Maryland's forensic laboratories. The following is a representation of the MD SAKI grant SAEKs that have been tested and have had the results confirmed by one of Maryland's forensic laboratories.
This is a snapshot overview of the MD SAKI grant SAEKs that have been tested thus far. The overview and numbers will continue to change as SAEKs move through the submission and testing process.
Below is a snapshot overview of the MD SAKI grant SAEKs that have been tested as of 1/31/22.
*DNA profiles may have been produced from additional tested SAEKs that are in the review process for possible upload to CODIS. As such, this number does not mean that there were no DNA profiles produced from the other SAEKs that have been tested.
